What Is a Reactive Load Bank

A reactive load bank is a specialized electrical testing device used to simulate inductive or capacitive loads in power systems, such as generators, UPS units, and transformers. Unlike resistive load banks that primarily dissipate real power (watts), reactive load banks absorb or supply reactive power (VARs), which is essential for evaluating how equipment performs under non-resistive loading conditions—common in industrial and utility environments.

Reactive load banks are typically categorized into inductive (lagging power factor) and capacitive (leading power factor) types. Inductive load banks mimic motors, transformers, and lighting systems, while capacitive load banks emulate power factor correction devices or long transmission lines. These systems help verify voltage regulation, excitation system response, and overall stability of AC power sources under dynamic reactive power demands.

The core components include precision-controlled reactors (for inductive) or capacitor banks (for capacitive), often combined with digital control systems for accurate VAR adjustment. Modern reactive load banks offer programmable step-wise or continuous reactive load control via interfaces like Modbus, CAN, or Ethernet. They may also integrate with thermal sensors, overvoltage protection, and emergency stop functions to meet IEC 60034-1 and IEEE C57.12.90 standards for safety and performance validation.

Such load banks are critical in generator factory acceptance testing (FAT), microgrid integration tests, and renewable energy grid compliance checks. For example, during wind farm commissioning, a reactive load bank helps assess how the inverter responds to rapid VAR changes—a key requirement for grid code compliance in many countries.
